Empathy is not Sympathy
First, let’s remember that empathy is NOT sympathy. Empathy is looking at someone’s situation and understanding how they got there whether you agree with it or not. Then you put yourself in their shoes and imagine what it feels like....
I think it is easy to end up in the weeds sometimes in relationships and situations because we look at things only from our view point and only from our experiences. We lose so much richness in our connections and understanding when we do that. I invite us all to slow down this week and listen without forming our response in our heads while the other person speaks, empathize, then respond.
